Gustave Moreau
Published in Hardcover by Princeton Univ Pr (08 March, 1999)
Authors: Genevieve Lacambre, Gustave Moreau, Larry J. Feinberg, Marie-Laure De Contenson, Art Institute of Chicago, and Douglas Druick
Average review score:

Sweet decadence
I had very high hopes when I bought this book, though afraid the text would override the images; however I wasn't disappointed. The sheer quality of the printing is nothing less than remarkable. All the images in this book meet the highest standards of the printer's profession. Books on the symbolist genius Gustave Moreau are extremely hard to come by, so Between Epic and Dream (the book's title) is a rare art book being the only large volume in print at the moment.
The text acompanying the lush pictures is very informative, not only on Moreau's life's work, but there are notes on each item underneath. There is a good balance between text and images and this makes the enjoyment of viewing or reading a particular delight. Moreau's watercolors are beautifully presented and so are the paintings with both large and medium reproductions. There are drawings and studies as well to give this book a usefulness to those who would study Moreau's methods of work.
This book is a great buy at a very reasonable price. You will only need Joris Karl Huysman's novel, Against Nature (describing the painting Salome on the cover), to dream away into sweet decadence.

A must for art freaks!
It's got all the goods: scholarly essays, dossiers on Gustave's most important works, wide historical sweep, accessibility for those who are more casual art-lovers, tons of color plates, good details (for painters like me, looking for something to steal). Moreau was a super-important figure in the decadent years of 19th Century France. Not as well known as, say, Degas or Courbet, his schtick seemed pretty far out. Anticipating Surrealism as well as the the nascent Symbolist movement, Moreau made insanely detailed, obessive, jewel-like paintings whose time is just now arriving. Make your coffee table as swanky and plush as an old New Orleans hotel. Moreau knew how to mix it up but certainly has his own flavor. Super great book.

The Idea Brokers: Think Tanks and the Rise of the New Policy Elite
Published in Hardcover by Free Press (January, 1991)
Author: James Allen Smith
Average review score:

Highly recommended !
The Idea Brokers is an excellent chronological exploration of the evolution and impact of think tanks on U.S. public policy. The reader is presented with a comprehensive history of these obscure institutions that have spawned dramatically since the start of the 20th-century. The author adequately provides a thorough and detailed account of the personalities that were responsible for establishing these research institutions, their intended purpose, their area of expertise, their advising successes and their implementation failures. At the end, you will agree that these research insitutions will only play a much larger role in shaping government policy and public opinion in the coming years.

An excellently researched book !
The Idea Brokers is a thorough and lucid chronological examination of the evolution and impact of the modern day research centers known as 'think tanks'. These obscure research centers have spawned dramatically over the past century and their significant contributions in shaping the policies of the United States are revealed.

In the Devil's Shadow: UN Special Operations During the Korean War (Naval Institute Special Warfare Series)
Published in Hardcover by United States Naval Inst. (10 March, 2000)
Author: Michael E. Haas
Average review score:

I met the author Col (ret) Michael Haas
Had an opportunity to listen to a briefing from Col Haas just yesterday. All I can say is he was absolutely fascinating. I have not had the pleasure of reading In the Devil's Shadow, but I am reading another book by Col Haas titled, Apollo's Warriors, a history of Air Force Special Operations during the Cold War. Col Haas is the real deal and loves writing about his special operations brothers. If the Devil's Shadow is a reflection of the author or his other works, then I would recommend it fully.

Information long hidden
This work is a must for those interested in Military History, especially the history of American Special Operations or in the Korean War. Col. Haas has written an easy to read, exceedinly well researched, well documented book which details the success and failure of special and partisan operations during the Korean War including those of the Central Intelligence Agency. The list of CIA documents alone, which Col. Haas obtained against all odds, makes this book worth obtaining. Without a doubt, it is the best book on Korean War special operations ever published.

Average review score:

A milestone in this field
It is a very well written text.It also includes chapters in advanced mechanics of materials field. I strongly recommend this book to ones who are interested in this field more than elemantary level.

Beautiful explanations for a second time reading...
I am surprised to see no reviews for this great book. This is one of those books which will be totally over your head the first time around. But if you don't lose heart and keep at it, you will realise it is a treasure trove. The style is extremely concise. What is said in 20 pages in other books gets about 5 pages, but beautifully. Read a sentence, contemplate over it and you will get it. Some of the example problems and explanations are so practical and simple, you will wonder why you should ever read another book. But you will need another book before this book starts to make any sense.

It's a Conspiracy!: The National Insecurity Council
Published in Paperback by Bathroom Readers Press (July, 1992)
Authors: American Paranoiac Institute and National Insecurity Council
Average review score:

A book every American man, woman and child should memorize.
"It's a Conspiracy" is a fanatastic book. Dozens of scandels are clearly and concisely reviewed in a very easy-to-read format. Numerous references are cited to validate the editors' statements. The sections on the JFK Assassination are particularly informative. "Conspiracy" contains many great quotes. All in all, it's a very clever book.

Great summary of every American conspiracy story.
Has entries for *every* American conspiracy story, with summaries of the evidence, the positions taken by all sides, and references for further reading. I learned a *ton*. Plus, it's funny. This little book saved me reading lots of big books on each conspiracy

Excellent - Clear and Concise
This guide is excellent. Very easy to find what you are looking for and written in layman's terms. The comments on past IRS law cases is especially clarifying. At the price, this is a bargain.

Excellent tribute to Goodall's life and work
_____I bought this book for my girlfriend, who is a huge fan of Jane Goodall. But I find myself picking it up and reading through it a lot. This book is an excellent read, for the casual animal lover as well as those with a deep interest in primatology.

_____The book covers much of Jane Goodall's life, including biographical info, historical research milestones, and even those special moments that make Goodall the concerned activist she is. It has well-written text and beautiful, high-quality photos. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in Jane Goodall, especially those who do not know much about her and would like a starter reference book.

A Worthy Devotion to an amazing Woman!
At 14, I admire and sulute Ms. Goodall! Her work and devotion to some the most fascinating of animals is absolutely stunning! I think that over her 40 wonderful at Gombe, she has developed a beautiful relationship with these animals, and you can definetely see and feel their love with this book! Everyone who has ever read her dazzling books or has any knowledge or admiration for Jane's hard and unmistakably hard work will enjoy this timeline of a stunning woman's life in Africa! Enjoy!

The Japanese High School: Silence and Resistance (Nissan Institute/Routledge Japanese Studies Series)
Published in Library Binding by Routledge (June, 1999)
Author: Shoko Yoneyama
Average review score:

ijime in japanese schools
This book provides documentation of the most sensational examples of ijime [bullying]in Japanese schools. It also gives examples of teacher-assisted ijime and the tragic consequences. Too often, these stories are buried and meant to be forgotten. It is the shameful underside of the Japanese school system. In a country where appearances are everything, the instances of bullying in schools are denied or delicately expurged form the national consciousness. No wonder it has never been translated into Japanese.

A wake up call to Japanese education
This book is a MUST read for anyone trying to understand the forces at work in Japanese schools and society (one and the same). I found it not only well documented but also highly readable, gripping even in parts, rare for an academic book. I only hope it will soon be published in Japanese so that the Japanese public can also benefit from Yoneyama's insights and in-depth research.

Contradicting the idea that Japan is the model education system, as seen in the eyes of many westerners trying to boost their own systems, Yoneyama shows how the excessive control from the top down by administrators of teachers and teachers of students is ultimately killing the system. At the same time students, in a desperate attempt to salvage some control, are literally killing themselves and each other.
